POPULATION

The map on the left shows the extinction of tigers from their historical ranges and the total number of tigers available currently in their present range. The figure below indicates the maximum and  minimum number of tigers according to the assessment done in 1998. Of the eight species only five are surviving today - three of them have already become extinct. As the figure indicates the number of South China tiger is very less and is facing a major threat of extinction.

MINIMUM

            MAXIMUM

The overall population of tiger as estimated in 1993 and 1998 is shown below. The minimum number of tigers in 1993 was 4400 and the maximum was 7700 where as in 2000/2001the minimum was 5700 and the maximum was 7000. So we can say that some stability has been reached in the tiger population in the last 10 years, though poaching & habitat degradation continues almost all over and distribution of tiger is shrinking, with extinction of some pocketed small populations. This has been possible because of concerted efforts of range, non-range states and tiger loving communities. We look forward for your further support in this regard.
